18. fashion legend :Alexander McQueen

Lee Alexander McQueen, CBE (17 March 1969 – 11 February 2010) was a British fashion designer and couturier best known for his in-depth knowledge of bespoke British tailoring, his tendency to juxtapose strength with fragility in his collections, as well as the emotional power and raw energy of his provocative fashion shows. He is also known for having worked as chief designer at Givenchy from 1996 to 2001 and for founding his own label under the name Alexander McQueen.[2] His achievements in fashion earned him four British Designer of the Year awards (1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003), as well as the CFDA's International Designer of the Year award in 2003. click here and here for more info.

comment: He's one of talented designer ever alive, but how unfortunate that he had to end his life just like that. We all need to appreciate what we have instead of wasting it...

17.fashion legend:Pierre Cardin

Pierre Cardin (French pronunciation: [pjɛʁ kaʁdɛ̃], born Pietro Cardin, is an Italian-born French fashion designer who was born on 7 July 1922, at San Biagio di Callalta near Treviso.
Cardin was known for his avant-garde style and his Space Age designs. He prefers geometric shapes and motifs, often ignoring the female form. He advanced into unisex fashions, sometimes experimental, and not always practical. He introduced the "bubble dress" in 1954.
Pierre Cardin was also designated UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 1991.
On 16 October 2009, Pierre Cardin was nominated Goodwill Ambassador of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).click here for more info.

comment: Well, I've heard of him back then when I was studying fashion design few years ago, but somehow he's not familiar to me like any other fashion legend such as Coco Chanel and Yvest Saint laurent, etc. However the contribution of decades in fashion is something worth an admirable applause.

16. Fashion legend : Versace

Official website Versace

Gianni Versace S.p.A. (Italian pronunciation: [ˈdʒanni verˈsaːtʃe]), usually referred to as Versace, is an Italian fashion label founded by Gianni Versace in 1978.

The first Versace boutique was opened in Milan's Via della Spiga in 1978, (though the Versace family are from Reggio Calabria) and its popularity was immediate. Today, Versace is one of the world's leading international fashion houses. Versace designs, markets and distributes luxury clothing, accessories, fragrances, makeup and home furnishings under the various brands of the Versace Group. more info about the history of this brand click here.

comment: The founder and the first creative designer/Creator of Versace, Gianni Versace was very talented and the label was well-known under his care. However after his death (murdered), his sister, Donatella, took over the role and it's not as it used to be. Well, they may be blood related, but the God gifted talent will not be the same. I used to love to make the designs as one of my reference for inspiration as any other fashion legends I've mentioned before.

fashion design world(history and explanantion)

this article is taken from here

Fashion design is the art of the application of design and aesthetics or natural beauty to clothing and accessories. Fashion design is influenced by cultural and social lattitudes, and has varied over time and place. Fashion designers work in a number of ways in designing clothing and accessories. Some work alone or as part of a team. They attempt to satisfy consumer desire for aesthetically designed clothing; and, because of the time required to bring a garment onto the market, must at times anticipate changing consumer tastes.

Fashion designers attempt to design clothes which are functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. They must consider who is likely to wear a garment and the situations in which it will be worn. They have a wide range and combinations of materials to work with and a wide range of colors, patterns and styles to choose from. Though most clothing worn for everyday wear fall within a narrow range of conventional styles, unusual garments are usually sought for special occasions, such as evening wear or party dresses.more info click link above.

my personal addition: well, actually I've never got this wide range explanation when I was in Fashion school. It was more like straight to the point and only short history in fashion. However as for explaining what was exactly the definition itself or the detail in fashion design had never occurred to me that it was this long and wide. I love Wiki for becoming the source of any information I want, almost everything. So, for beginners or anyone who are interested in this field fell free to find out more before you're involved inside.

fashion legend :15.issey miyake

Issey Miyake ( Miyake Issei?, born 22 April 1938) is a Japanese fashion designer. He is known for his technology-driven clothing designs, exhibitions and fragrances.

Issey Miyake, one of the Nihon's most respected and well-known designers, refers to his designs not as clothing, or ready-to-wear ensembles, but rather art pieces. And why not? Many of the designs from Miyake et al are stunningly beautiful, but not the kind of thing you'd wear to the cricket, or even to dinner in some cases.Issey Miyake thinks differently from the more orthodox designer. Hailing from Japan, most would expect him to create 'art pieces' with an oriental flavour. While he will do this - and still does - he also creates pieces that are far more westernised than most would expect.Born in Hiroshima, Japan, Issey Miyake was seven years old when the USA dropped an atomic bomb on his country.

Sadly, his mother was badly burned by the bombing of Hiroshima and died four years later. But, in an ironic twist of fate, the American occupation of Japan that occurred after the attack gave a young Issey a first-hand look at Western culture.Miyake had always wanted to be a fashion designer, and in 1959 he enrolled in a graphic arts course at Tokyo's famous Tama Art University. Five years later - in early 1965 - he moved to Paris to fulfil his dream and started looking for work in the Big Smoke.

Right out of the blocks, Miyake's talent was evident and he scored a gig with Guy Laroche in only his second year in France, which lasted from 1966, to 1968. In the year that he ditched Laroche, he was snapped up by none other than the Givenchy house of design. Then in 1969 he moved to New York City to work for Geoffrey Beene and two years later, after earning a good deal of capital, he set up his first creative studio - the Miyake Design Studio, or MDS, in Tokyo. This wasn't so much a place of design and production, but a more a laboratory of sorts, where Miyake started experimenting with various blends of fabric and synthetic textiles.

Issey Miyake

Issey: Mens fashion that doesn't suck

Soon after this in 1971, Miyake International Incorporated was set up and the Japanese designer launched his first collection. It was exhibited in both New York, where he was residing, and also in Tokyo.Miyake's first fashion show in Paris was a hit (1973) and by '79, he had set up an arm of his design house in France.During the '70s Miyake's work was largely conceptual - he pioneered a vast array of techniques, many incorporating age-old Japanese traditions - but it was the during 1980s that Miyake stirred the soul of the masses.

Creating more affordable ensembles, Issey Miyake's trademark of the 1980s was practicality and usefulness in fab.Making use of natural fibres and other fabrics, painstakingly researched at the Miyake Design Studio in Tokyo, his designs became hugely successful, not just in high cultural circles, either. In the '90s Issey Miyake is largely accepted for kicking off the pleat, which today comes and goes with fashion trends year-in and year-out. His development of the pleating theory revolved around first sewing garments, then finishing them, and finally the pleating. From here on in, Miyake's designs would influence not just the world of fashion, but even sport. For instance in 1992, Miyake designed the pleated jackets for the Lithuanian team at the Barcelona Olympics.Today Issey Miyake's designs can be purchased all around the world, . He has quite a following locally, and right around the world, and doesn't look like slowing any time soon. more info here and here or official site Issey Miyake.com

comment: well, just now i remembered the gift from my ex-boss was an Issey Miyake's expensive perfume, i always admire the design concept of the bottle and the cover. he designed a very unique style for his clothes, accessories and fragrances.

Having been bought by the Gucci Group in 2001, Stella McCartney's was a profitable brand going through vast expansion by 2008 - particularly in Asia - and her family was growing, too: she had three children in the space of almost as many years. The well-known fact is that her father is ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney.

• Stella McCartney's label was launched in 1995
• Stella McCartney was appointed chief designer at the French ready-to-wear house, Chloe, in March 1997. Her first collection teamed lacy petticoat skirts with fine tailoring and was hailed a triumph

• In 2001 Stella was recruited by Gucci to develop her own label and Phoebe Philo took over at Chloe
• In 2003 she married Alasdhair Willis, the publisher of Wallpaper, on the island of Bute - wearing an updated version of her mother's wedding dress

fashion legend: 11.valentino

Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani, best known as Valentino (born 11 May 1932) is an Italian fashion designer and founder of the Valentino SpA brand and company. His fashion house is among the world's most famous haute couture and ready-to-wear fashion empires.

Valentino became interested in men and women's fashion while in primary school in his native Voghera, Lombardy, northern Italy, when he apprenticed under his aunt Rosa and local designer Ernestina Salvadeo, an aunt of noted artist Aldo Giorgini). At 17, Valentino moved to Paris to pursue this interest with the help of his mother Teresa de Biaggi and his father Mauro Garavani. There he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.

His first choice in Paris was Jacques Fath, then Balenciaga. He then found apprentice jobs with Jean Desses where he used to help style icon countess Jacqueline de Ribes sketch her dress ideas. He then joined Guy Laroche for 2 years. At Desses, Valentino sketched furiously, between helping with window dressing and greeting clients for the daily 2:30 p.m. private showings. Most of his early sketches were lost. At a Rome exhibition in 1991 a smattering went on display and current clients at that time such as Marie Hélène de Rothschild and Elizabeth Taylor marveled that the DNA of Valentino's style was already apparent in the layers of white pleats and animal prints.click here for detail info.

fashion legend: 10.viviene westwood

Dame Vivienne Westwood, DBE, RDI (born 8 April 1941) is a British fashion designer largely responsible for bringing modern punk and new wave fashions into the mainstream.

The English Punk style began to gain attention when the Sex Pistols wore clothes from Westwood and McLaren's shop at their first gig. The "punk style" included BDSM fashion, bondage gear, safety pins, razor blades, bicycle or lavatory chains on clothing and spiked dog collars for jewelry, as well as outrageous make-up and hair. Essential design elements include the adoption of traditional elements of Scottish design such as tartan fabric. Amongst the more unusual elements of her style is the use of historical 17th and 18th century cloth cutting principles, and reinterpreting these in, for instance, radical cutting lines to mens trousers. Use of these traditional elements make the overall effect of her designs more shocking. Other influences in Westwood's work have included Peru, the feminine figure, velvet and knitwear.

Westwood and McLaren worked together to revolutionize fashion and their impact is still strongly felt today. Westwood has five exclusively-owned shops; three in London, one in Leeds, and one in Milan. Franchise stores are located in Liverpool, Newcastle, Glasgow, three in Manchester and most recently, in FH Mall, Nottingham (20 March 2008), and in Blake Street, York (11 September 2008). Westwood's themes have included Savage (1981), Hobo and Buffalo (1982), and Pirate. Her latest collection was themed "Gold and Treasure, Adventure and Exploration".complete info click here

fashion legend :7.elsa schiaparelli

Elsa Schiaparelli (10 September 189013 November 1973) was an Italian fashion designer. Along with Coco Chanel, she is regarded as one of the most prominent figures in fashion between the two World Wars.[1] Starting with knitwear, Schiaparelli's designs were heavily influenced by Surrealists like her collaborators Salvador Dalí and Alberto Giacometti. Her clients included the heiress Daisy Fellowes and actress Mae West.

Schiaparelli did not adapt to the changes in fashion following World War II and her business closed in 1954.

In Paris, Schiaparelli - known as "Schiap" to her friends - began making her own clothes. With some encouragement from Paul Poiret, she started her own business but it closed in 1926 despite favourable reviews.[2] She launched a new collection of knitwear in early 1927 using a special double layered stitch created by Armenian refugees[2] and featuring sweaters with surrealist trompe l'oeil images. Although her first designs appeared in Vogue, the business really took off with a pattern that gave the impression of a scarf wrapped around the wearer's neck.[2] The "pour le Sport" collection expanded the following year to include bathing suits, skiwear and linen dresses. The divided skirt, a forerunner of shorts, shocked the tennis world when worn by Lili de Alvarez at the Wimbledon Championships in 1931.[2] She added evening wear to the collection in 1931, and the business went from strength to strength, culminating in a move from Rue de la Paix to the Schiap Shop in the Place Vendôme.[2]

A darker tone was set when France declared war on Germany in 1939; Schiaparelli's Spring 1940 collection featured "trench" brown and camouflage print taffetas.[2] Soon after the fall of Paris on 14 June 1940, Schiaparelli sailed to New York for a lecture tour; apart from a few months in Paris in early 1941, she remained in New York until the end of the war.[2] On her return she found that fashions had changed, with Christian Dior's New Look marking a rejection of pre-war fashion. The house of Schiaparelli struggled in the austerity of the post-war period, and Elsa finally closed it down in December 1954,[2] the same year that her great rival Chanel returned to the business. Aged 64, she wrote her autobiography and then lived out a comfortable retirement between her apartment in Paris and house in Tunisia. She died on 13 November 1973.click here for complete info

Acceding to his parents' wishes, Dior attended the École des Sciences Politiques from 1920 to 1925. The family, whose fortune was derived from the manufacture of fertilizer, had hopes he would become a diplomat, but Dior only wished to be involved in the arts, mostly fashion, but sketching as well. To make money, he sold his fashion sketches on the streets for about 10 cents each. After leaving school he received money from his father so that in 1928 he could open a small art gallery, where he sold art by the likes of Pablo Picasso. After a family financial disaster that resulted in his father losing his business, Dior was forced to close the gallery. From 1937-39 he worked with Robert Piguet until being called up for military service. In 1942, having left the Army, Dior joined the fashion house of Lucien Lelong where he and Pierre Balmain were the primary designers. For the duration of World War II, Christian Dior dressed the wives of the Nazi officers and French collaborators.
